The city's name means "January River," and the city itself was discovered by the Portuguese in 1565. The city's Tijuca National Park is an eco-park that UNESCO considers the first urban forest. Other popular tourist destinations in the city include Flamengo Park, Macarana Stadium, Museum of Tomorrow, and the most famous of them all – Christ the Redeemer Statue.
