Hospitals provide an immensely necessary service within society, and due to their nature, they can come with a large number of occupational risks. It is vital for management to control these risks through occupational safety management, or it could lead to a greater mortality rate of patients and employees becoming injured at a significant rate.
A primary factor in managing occupational safety is to develop a great understanding of the risks themselves. Through risk and hazard assessments, management can gather detailed data surrounding the types of risks, their frequency and where they are most likely to occur. Using this data, preventive measures can be effectively implemented to reduce risk probability. Other measures such as PPE and different security systems can also minimise risk potential.
Risks can occur in many different ways, but a risk that is prevalent throughout any healthcare facility is infectious disease. There are extensive measures that can be taken to reduce the chance of disease spreading, and these measures begin with understanding exactly what an infectious disease is, how it can spread and what actions can be done to prevent it.

Fundamentals of Occupational Health and Safety
- Defining what an occupational risk is.
- Identifying common occupational risks within a hospital and how they typically occur.
- Investigating national and international laws and regulations surrounding health and safety and standards of practice.
- Exploring the technical and administrative requirements to aid in safety.
- Evaluating the specific safety requirements of different hospital departments – laboratories, operation rooms, consultation rooms and more.
Section 2
Risk Assessments
- Discovering risks and hazards through conducting thorough risks assessments and hazard identification procedures.
- Analysing risk data and creating risk management plans detailing all known factors of the risk, including cause, probability, and preventative measures.
- The classification of risk.
- Ensuring all employees are aware of the policies and procedures of reporting risks.
- Guaranteeing the regular maintenance of all fire safety equipment.
Section 3
Safety Systems
- Explaining what the HACCP system is and why it is necessary in a hospital setting.
- Describing the 7 principles of HACCP and how they contribute to its success.
- The process of planning, organising, management and guidance while implementing different safety procedures.
- Focusing on the specific purpose and usability of a safety system – bathroom alarms, medical restraints, and more.

Infectious Disease
- Differentiating the terms of infection and infectious disease.
- Analysing the different types of disease-causing pathogens and how they typically spread.
- Utilising various methods to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
- How to report a notifiable disease.
- Analysing the trends of diseases and enacting preventative measures to stop outbreaks before they start.
Section 5
Hospital Risk Management
- Establishing preventative measures and corrective actions for all identified risks.
- Providing necessary PPE to all employees who require it.
- Regular maintenance of PPE to ensure maximum effectiveness.
- Classifying dangerous areas within the hospital and monitoring who is able to access them.
- Placing warning signs throughout the hospital to ensure patients, visitors and employees are risk aware.
- Carefully handling and storing hazardous materials and waste.
Certificate Description
