Course Summary

Hospitals provide an immensely necessary service within society, and due to their nature, they can come with many occupational risks. It is vital for management to control these risks through occupational safety management, or it could lead to a greater mortality rate of patients and employees becoming injured at a significant rate.

A primary factor in managing occupational safety is developing a thorough understanding of the risks themselves. Through risk and hazard assessments, management can gather detailed data surrounding the types of risks, their frequency, and where they are most likely to occur. Using this data, preventive measures can be effectively implemented to reduce risk probability. Other measures like PPE and different security systems can also minimise risk potential.

Risks can occur in many different ways, but infectious disease is a risk prevalent throughout any healthcare facility. Extensive measures can be taken to reduce the chance of disease spreading, and these measures begin with understanding exactly what an infectious disease is, how it can spread, and what actions can be taken to prevent it.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the vitality of managing occupational safety in hospitals.
  • Acknowledge and predict the potential consequences of poor occupational safety management.
  • Comply with all national laws relating to health and safety.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify all types of risks and hazards throughout the hospital.
  • Implement risk management plans to help prevent the occurrence of risks.
  • Establish a variety of emergency procedures and instructions, and ensure all employees are competent in these.
  • Effectively dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste.
  • Comprehend the methods of transmission of pathogens and implement an infection control program.

This course is designed for anyone in a hospital setting responsible for maintaining maximum health and safety standards. It would be most beneficial for:

  • Hospital Directors
  • Risk Managers
  • Risk Analysts
  • HSE Officers
  • Clinical Managers
  • Pharmaceutical Directors
  • Laboratory Personnel
  • Senior Nurses

This course uses a variety of adult learning styles to aid full understanding and comprehension. Participants will be provided examples of real-world PPE to identify their purpose, their effectiveness and suggest possible changes that could improve them.

They will be able to partake in a variety of learning methods and exercises, including seminars, video materials, group discussions and group activities. This combination of learning exercises allows for greater learning development and guarantees that the participants will develop a full and comprehensive understanding of the content and any related practical skills.
